Cookie in the crate.

Every day before I leave the apartment, I call Boogie to his crate and I feed him a treat. Today as I was preparing for the outdoors, Boogie was already chillin’ out inside his crate so I said “Good boy”, shut the door and dropped a cookie in between the bars. This was no ordinary cookie treat….
This box of Classic Cremes came from the Three Dog Bakery and costs TEN BUCKS. Which is quite astounding when the human version contains triple the amount of ingredients and costs about two bucks. I tasted one of these cookies out of curiosity… wow, it looks and tastes just like the human version, only less sweet.
When I returned home an hour later,to my surprise, the cookie was still there in the crate, sitting next to Boogie! Boogie rushed out of his crate to greet me then popped back in, grabbed his cookie and gobbled it up in 2 seconds. He SAVED the cookie for a happy occasion?
Is this behavior really strange or do other dogs do this? I mean… he didn’t bury it under anything. It was just lying there on the blanket in his crate…

Boogie: "More, please".
We then did a short “Leave It” exercise with another cookie.
Boogie was a good boy.

What a good boy. I thought dogs are all about instant gratification… it’s interesting that he saves the cookie. 🙂

My dogs do that with water: I leave a nice, full bowl out for them before I go anywhere and the second I walk back in the house everyone gulps down a gallon of water as though they had just trudged through the Sahara and how dare I leave them without a drop of water to drink?!?

Barrie – Why do you think they do that?
You know the theory about leaving your dog a stuffed kong or chew toy to entertain themselves with when you are out? Well, that NEVER WORKS with Boogie. He only plays when I am in the same room. (I have spied on him from outside the apartment)

My dogs empty Kongs and kibble dispensing food puzzles when I am away but all of them have learned to play the waiting game on frozen Kongs. My JRT will lie down facing the frozen Kong waiting for it to defrost enough to be easier to clean out crossing her paws that she times it right so that I don’t come home and take it away first 😉
My guess is that some dogs are aware that if you don’t come back that is their last whatever and are afraid to eat it immediately in case they need it later or something? Or it could be resource guarding plus you’ve been playing IYC with Boogie which could have impacted that but ultimately, I don’t think anyone really knows 🙂

My Boston, Porkchop, will do that sometimes too! Not as much lately, maybe our current treats are too irresistible. BTW Boogie is too cute. I love the two colored eyes 🙂
