Boogie on DOWN – advice welcome!

DISCLAIMER: This blog post was written in 2009. We no longer do Obedience Training using “dominance”-based methods. We no longer use collar corrections. These methods made Boogie MORE TENSE, MORE TRIGGERED and more prone to aggressive behaviors. We switched over to reward-based methods in February 2010 and saw improvements.

I have posted a thread on the WOOF forum (you have to be registered as a member to see it). It is about the “DOWN” command.

This is the hardest thing ever! Boogie knows HEEL, SIT, STAY but DOWN is downright impossible!

Boogie will NOT lie down on the DOWN command. I have tried everything I can think of. I have used all different kinds of treats including his favorite beef sticks and cooked meat. I cannot even physically PUSH him down (he resists) – not that I should even be doing this!

The only way I can get his belly to the ground is to put the treat under the coffee table and he has to crawl through to get the treat (and then we praise and praise him and give him the treat). However, he isn’t associating the lying down position with the command.

With no coffee table, when we say “DOWN” he sits and stares at the treat and will not move. He will sit there for up to 15 minutes staring at the treat, waiting for it to magically fly up towards his mouth (?)… No response. And then he turns away and loses interest. He would rather not have the treat than lie down to get it.

Jill the trainer told us to keep correcting him with the prong collar each time he doesn’t go “down” on command but this doesn’t seem to achieve anything and I hate overdoing the prong collar. Boogie clearly does not understand DOWN and it makes no sense to me to keep “pinching” him until he gets it…  He only gets increasingly stressed and confused when corrected like this, and I wonder if there is some other way…

I am open to ideas!
